TOP 10 POISONS TO DOGS AND CATS

Each year the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline receives hundreds of thousands of phone calls involving pets exposed to a potentially poisonous substance.

In recognition of Poison Prevention Week March 18-24 CARE Veterinary Center shares our list of the Top 10 Poisonous Substance to Pets.

Dog Poisons:
1. Chocolate
2. Mouse and Rat Poisons (rodenticides)
3. Anti-inflammatory medications
4. Xylitol (sugar-free gum & more)
5. Grapes and Raisins
6. Antidepressant Medications
7. Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol)
8. Vitamin D Overdose
9. Stimulant Medications (e.g., for ADD/ADHD)
10. Fertilizers: herbicides and fungicides

Cat Poisons:
1. Lilies (Lilium species)
2. Spot-on flea/tick medication for dogs
3. Household Cleaners
4. Antidepressant Medications
5. Essential Oils
6. Anti-inflammatory Medications
7. Mouse and Rat Poisons (rodenticides)
8. Stimulant Medications (e.g., for ADD/ADHD)
9. Onions and Garlic
10. Vitamin D Overdose

Indications of toxicity include gastrointestinal (e.g., drooling, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea) and central nervous system (e.g., weakness, ataxia, seizures, tremors, etc.), cardiac.

You know your pet’s behavior better than anyone so if something seems wrong, go with your instinct. Remain calm, call your veterinarian, and gather up any of the remaining potential poison - this may be helpful to the doctor. Timely and accurate information could save the life of your pet.
